Brookgreen Gardens is a National Historic Landmark located just outside of Murrells Inlet. Established by Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington in 1931 as a non-profit garden museum to display art objects in a natural setting and preserve native flora and fauna. Anna Hyatt Huntington was a nationally recognized artist during the Great Depression.
This 9200 acre property has been considered the “floral jewel of South Carolina’s coastal community.” There are a vast array of habitats preserved on this property ranging from forested swamps to salt marsh to fresh tidal swamps and so much more. There initial vision of the Huntington family has been preserved through out time. There are collections of sculptures, the Low Country Zoo is on hand to show off and preserve native species of animals, the magnificent gardens and so much more. Brookgreen gardens definitely require multiple visits to be able to take in all that it has to offer.
There are festivals and events throughout the year in the various gardens, restaurants, etc at Brookgreen Garden. This Myrtle Beach attraction should be on everyone’s list to visit and enjoy the natural splendors of a time gone by in South Carolina.
